Vera Rena 18790125 Faille and Silk Gauze Ball Dress Sewing Pattern
Item No.: 18790125 FAILLE AND SILK GAUZE BALL DRESS
Bust Size Range: 34–44 inches
Pattern Source: Reproduction of the original antique pattern from 1879 Harper's Bazaar
This evening gown is a classic ball dress from the late 1870s Victorian era. Originally crafted in pale blue faille and silk gauze, it features restrained silhouettes and timeless antique elegance. Designed to follow the natural waistline with a fitted Basque bodice, layered drapery at the back hem creates fullness, ideal for formal evening receptions and vintage balls.
The bodice is constructed with an outer layer of silk gauze and faille lining. Piping trims the neckline and lower edge; lined sleeves are sewn with precise seam matching. The bodice closes at the back via metal eyelets laced with blue silk cord. It is finished with a matching silk gauze berthe adorned with sprays of pink roses and green foliage. The skirt features narrow side-pleated silk gauze ruffles and loops of watered ribbon on the front. Pleated drapery and a tunic overlay decorate the back, accented with ribbon bows for layered ornamental detail.
This pattern set includes all pattern pieces: half front, side form, back and sleeve. Comprehensive traditional sewing instructions cover dart construction, seam pressing, eyelet buttonholing, boning installation, piping and waist belt fabrication. Historical tailoring techniques, boning placement and shaping guidelines are fully documented.
A0 printing instructions are provided for 1:1 full-scale output, complete with a 3-inch test square to avoid sizing errors caused by improper scaling.
